OchoCinco’s going all out for Breast Cancer Awareness

Chad OchoCinco said on his twitter:
@OGOchocCinco: I’ll be wearing all pink gloves, shoes and wrist bands in support of breast cancer awareness throughout the Month of October”
@OGOchoCinco: Oh and as for getting fined I probably will because my entire shoe is pink, gloves are all pink and wrist bands I’ll match the fine n donate”
@OGOchoCinco: NFL is supporting the pink<_ I went a step further by having everything pink I’m wearing, mouth piece and chin strap to.”

OchoCinco is finally using his antics for a good cause, so should Roger Goodell fine him? How much?

AFC Division Leaders: Contender or Pretender?

Follow up to yesterdays “NFC Division Leaders: Contender or Pretender?

AFC East – New York Jets (3-0)
Rex Ryan has really given this team a new look. The Jets defense has held opponents to only 33 points this year, most notably holding Tom Brady and the Patriots offense to only nine points. Linebacker David Harris has come up big, leading the team in sacks (2) and total tackles (21).

Mark Sanchez is winning games by working within the scheme of the offense and with ball security, the Jets are plus-3 in turnover margin through three games. His touchdown scramble against Tennessee showed his dedication to winning, but also a reckless abandon of concern for his health. Leon Washington and Thomas Jones are giving the Jets a good ground game to keep pressure off Sanchez.

If the Jets continue receiving the kind of defensive contribution that they have thus far then they’re looking at a division title. However, you can never count out the Patriots, who have seemingly struggled but managed to start 2-1, if they can fix their offensive issues. Contender

AFC North – Baltimore Ravens (3-0)
The Baltimore Ravens are arguably the hottest team in the AFC right now, and possibly the NFL. Joe Flacco is already having a great second season, completing 65.4 percent of his passes with six touchdowns. Flacco’s 101.4 qb rating ranks fifth in the league. Ray Rice and Willis McGahee are each averaging over five yards-per-carry, with McGahee contributing five rushing touchdowns.

The Ravens defense has been stellar, as has come to be expected. Ray Lewis led by example in Week 2 with his big stop against San Diego’s Darren Sproles. Baltimore is two games ahead of Pittsburgh for the AFC North division lead, if they can hold on and win the division then they’re favorites to win the AFC Championship. Contender

NFC Division Leaders: Contender or Pretender?

Sure it’s only Week 3 and there is a lot of football left to be played, but who among division leaders are serious contenders and who are pretenders?

NFC East – New York Giants (3-0)
The Giants are the defending NFC East champions and are only two years off a Super Bowl championship. Eli Manning hasn’t missed a beat despite of the loss of Plaxico Burress, and proved it with a last-minute game-winning drive against the Dallas Cowboys.

Steve Smith and Mario Manningham have stepped up, combining for 66 percent of the Giants total catches. If the Giants continue getting this level of production from their offense and defense then the Giants have a serious shot at the NFC championship this season. Contender

NFC North – Minnesota Vikings (3-0)
Brett Favre answered a lot of questions with his 32-yard touchdown to Greg Lewis with :02 left to put Minnesota on top of San Francisco 27-24. The Vikings now have a passing game to compliment their rushing game, something they haven’t had for several seasons. However, two of Minnesota’s three wins have come against Detroit and Cleveland who have a combined 1-5 record. Favres longevity is a question, though, and without him the Vikings are lost. For right now.

Chicago and Green Bay aren’t both 2-1 and will be tough competition for the Vikings if Favre wears out.Pretender

Down but not out… yet

Nine teams have started the 2009 season with an 0-2 record. History is against them, as only about 14 percent of teams since 1990 to start the season 0-2 have made the playoffs. The good news is that the 2007 Super Bowl champion New York Giants started that season winless through two weeks.

Of the nine teams to start the season 0-2 who has the best chance of making the playoffs?

St. Louis, Detroit and Kansas City all have far too much work to do before playoffs can even be considered.

The Chiefs last made the playoffs in 2006, losing to the Colts in the first round. Since then, they’ve had consecutive season with 12-or-more losses. They don’t have the pieces in place to take this team anywhere. I’m not convinced Matt Cassel is the real deal. Head coach Todd Haley has a long road ahead of him to take this team to the playoffs.

Preseason Hockey Rundown

The NHL season is just around the corner. The reigning Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins have struggled, as the Vancouver Canucks have cruised to a 5-0 record to this point. There are a few things around the league that merit mention:

“Olie the Goolafkolzigalie” retires
Former Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig retired after 14 seasons in the NHL. Kolzig was the first South African-born player to play in the NHL, drafted in 1989 by the Washington Capitals.

Kolzig ranks 21st in NHL history with 303 wins. He holds several Capitals team records; including wins, save percentage, and shutouts among many others.

Peter Forsberg to make another comeback
Forsberg signed a one-week contract with his hometown team in Modo, Sweden. Forsbergs career has been plagued with recurrent foot injuries that have forced him out of the NHL. His contract with Modo expires in time for him to play in the NHL this season, if he so chooses. When healthy, Forsberg is one of the most exciting players to watch; hopefully, this comeback will at least last an entire season.

Forsberg has attempted several comebacks, all of which have been cut short by his foot injury.

Panthers name Bryan McCabe captain
The Florida Panthers named 34-year old defenseman Bryan McCabe as captain. Cory Stillman and Stephen Weiss will serve as assistants.

McCabe has served as either captain or assistant captain for every team he has played for in his 14-year career; with the Islanders, Canucks, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, and now with the Panthers.

Heisman Watch (Week 3)

Jahvid-Best

I’ve compiled a list of players who have stated the best case, through week three, to win the Heisman.

1. Jahvid Best, RB, Cal
If you didn’t get a chance to watch Best play against Minnesota last weekend then you missed out. Best reeled off five touchdowns on the ground in one of the most impressive displays of running in recent memory.

2. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
He is one of the best college quarterbacks to ever play the game. He makes plays that many quarterbacks wouldn’t even think about making, e.g. the bone-crushing collision with Tennessee safety Eric Berry. The simple fact of the matter is that he wins.

So whose fault is it really?

Tony Romo and Wade Phillips both took responsibility for the 33-31 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. So whose fault is it really?

The short answer is both.

You can also throw Jason Garrett into the blame game for his poor playcalling.

Romo threw three interceptions against the Giants, and recorded his lowest total yards passing since he became a full-time starter. All of the interceptions were a direct result of Romo’s lack of accuracy as the ball was thrown in every direction except the receivers.

However, the onus is always on the coach. The Cowboys looked absolutely lost not only on offense but on defense, as well, as the Giants rang up 427 yards of offense. If Phillips had competently and properly coached his team they would’ve come away with a victory in a game that they should have won.

The Hornets SUCK

Sorry about not posting much recently. Things have been a bit busy. What’s the deal with the New Orleans Hornets? Here’s my take:

It’s no secret when I tell you Byron Scott will be fired at some point in this season, it’s just a matter of when. Last night the Hornets dropped yet another loss, this time by the hands of the Phoenix Suns 124-104 in a game that wasn’t even as close as the score indicates. Chris Paul is on a poorly coached team surrounded by scrubs and castoffs that have no true identity and no strengths.

This is not the same team that finished 2nd in the Western Conference just two seasons ago. No, that team is long gone. As is, this is a team that will struggle to reach .500 unless something miraculous happens. What’s that miracle you ask?

Byron Scott being fired!

Go ahead and throw in all those rediculous looking assistant coaches while you’re at it.

This team has reached its peak and now is just free falling to mediocrity.

The team sits 3-6 right now with a mere three players scoring in double figures including 26 from Chris Paul, 15 from David West (down from 20 a year ago) and 11 from Emeka Okafor. After those three, Scott has already tried more line up formations than a down syndrome kid fiddling with a rubrics cube (yeah it’s that bad). Scott is blindly trying to mix and match a lineup that can compete but is failing to realize that the talent he has outside of the top three, is nothing to write home about. They’re bad. Real bad. The worst part about it is there is nothing Scott can do to move any of these guys.

This is how the unmovable salaries are looking for the Hornets:

Morris Peterson- 2 years remaining @ $5.8 million per

Peja Stojakovic- 2 years remaining @ $13.392 million per

James Posey- 2 years remaining @ $6 million per

Darius Songaila- 2 years remaining @ $4.5 million per

Emeka Okafor- 5 years remaining @ $10.797 million per

The rest of the guys on the team are semi-movable but would return no true value. The best trade bait the Hornets have is in David West who is still due three years @ $9 million per, but the Hornets would insist that any team that wants West would have to take on one or two of the guys above. Hilton Armstrong could give a team some cap relief since this is the last year of his deal with a shade under $3 million owed to him. In short, the Hornets hands are tied when it comes to moving most of the guys. They would be reluctant to do anything with West since the team still looks at him as one of the top forwards in the conference. What they fail to realize is that the undersized forward is not among the elite. In fact he’s far from it judging by his play to start this season.

Along with firing Scott, here are some of my ideas towards improving this team in the short term:

First off, package a deal to the Chicago Bulls for Tyrus Thomas. It’s common knowledge the Bulls want to trade Thomas’ expiring contract (worth right at $5 million) and the Bees could stand to get a little bit younger and athletic. The thing is, the Hornets would have to part with West. To make this work the Bees would try to give up Peterson and would have to take on some more salary. That’s where Kirk Hinrich comes in (making $9.5 million for the next 3 years). Hinrich could serve as a great backup point guard and could also see time playing the two-guard along side Chris Paul. The Hornets would shed about $600,000 worth of salary for this season but would save roughly $6 million long term. The trade makes the Hornets instantly better on defense and gives the team two guys that can play substantial minutes by only giving up one guy. I’d pull the trigger on this deal!

Let’s try another trade. This one takes on a tad less talent, but still sheds salary and gives the team more flexibility heading into the ever so important summer of 2010. The Hornets trade West, Posey and Armstrong to the Miami Heat for Udonis Haslem (expiring @ $7 million) and Quinton Richardson (expiring at $8.7 million). The Hornets would have both players off their books by season’s end and would save more than $33 million in the long run. The team would take a hit in the talent category until season’s end, but would have enough money to go out and sign a marquee free agent over the summer like Chris Bosh or Lebron James (I could picture Lebron in a Hornets Jersey, can’t you?). Why would the Heat do this trade? Well it makes the Heat better right now. The Heat weren’t able to land Carlos Boozer or Lamar Odom in the offseason and they know that in order to keep Dwayne Wade happy they have to build a solid team around him. David West might be the guy the Heat need to resign Wade. This one is a little more likely to happen than the first.

Are you starting to see a trend here? We’re going to have to give up players to get players and outside of trading Paul, West is the guy the Hornets must trade in order to compete.

Of course, for any of this to happen the Hornets must rid themselves of Byron Scott. Many people are predicting him to be canned by Thanksgiving. I think it might take a little bit more time than that considering Hornets owner George Shin is illiterate and still doesn’t quite know if we won the game last night or not (we loss George, now go back to sleep). Scott will be out of here by mid-to-late December. Mark it down in the books. The likely replacement will be New Orleans native Avery Johnson (although I would prefer a guy like Brian Shaw).

Let’s make this fun. How about we turn this into a contest? I want YOU to e-mail me the date you think Byron Scott will be fired on or around. If your within 5 days of the date, I’ll mention you in an upcoming sports column in Tiger Weekly. Fair enough?
